This procedure is actually a reminder of kitten hood. From the age of three weeks until weaning kittens spend a lot of their time kneading and purring around their mothers milk supplying nipples.

Kittens learn very quickly that the movement of their paws on either side of the nipple stimulates and increases the milk flow.

A soft and warm or comfortable area, whether it be our laps or the favorite cushion on the couch seems to bring out this kittenish behavior in cats.

this goes back to when they were kittens and had to knead their mother's tit for milk . an older cat does this for affection and comfort. it is sort of like when we want comfort food, a cat wants comfort action.

All cats can be trained. I've never met a cat that couldn't be trained. My cat LITERALLY uses the toilet (although he doesn't flush), and knows all sorts of 'dog' tricks. You teach them just like you would a dog.

Cars only do what they want to do. You cannot normally teach a cat to behave much less do tricks

I used a clicker that you'd normally use for dogs to train them. I also rewarded my kitten with a yummy treat after he did the trick correctly. What did I teach my kitten to do? I taught him how to sit : )
Now whenever I have a yummy treat for him he sits even though I didn't ask him to, lol! Sometimes when I don't want him bolting out my front door, I tell him to sit and he listens. I've gotta teach him some more tricks! He's not a Chartreux, just a regular tabby cat that my daughter rescued when he was an emaciated 3.5 week old kitten. He is now a happy 5 month old kitten who will be neutered this month.
I found these links on tips about training kitties to do tricks!

Don't hit the cat...our cat did the same thing when he was a kitten, the vet told us when he bites to grab him by the scruff of the neck and very firmly say NO BITING! Then push him away and do not give attention for a while. It worked.
